Pedasi, Panama is a Spanish colonial town situated in the 3rd largest province of Panama, Los Santos. Combined with Herrara, this makes up The Azuero Peninsula which is considered the heartland of Panama. This is the “Real Panama”! Pedasi is principally a fishing village with a population of approximately 3000 inhabitants, famous for its traditions and folklore. Some 300-400 of these inhabitants are expats of all age groups from all over the world. Italy, France, Israel, Australia and, of course, USA and Canada are all well represented here. With picturesque rolling hills and lush green tropical landscape Pedasi is regularly compared to the Tuscan regions of Italy. The district of Pedasi is divided into five townships: Purio Mariabé, Pedasí (municipal seat), Los Asientos and Oria Arriba. Other neighboring areas such as Chitre and Las Tablas are considerably more built up offering a much more urban feel where you will find all the main banks, malls, supermarkets and well known fast food chains – great for a day out shopping when you need a break from the beach, which probably won’t be often!
Take a stroll down through Pedasi town plaza center-pieced by a beautiful century old traditional Catholic church. Numerous restaurants and workshops selling local wares such as hand crafted jewelry can be found here. See the Spanish colonial architecture of quaint homes in every color and friendly neighbors talking and smiling on their verandas whilst rocking on their chairs or swinging in a hammock. Always happy for chat and a warm ‘Hola’ Pedasi is an extremely laid back community like no other. Think “Key West” of the 1930′s and ’40′s with all of today’s modern conveniences. Pedasi’s atmosphere is what Key West must have felt like.
Pedasi offers excellent infrastructure such as improved roads, cable and high speed internet. There is a health clinic, a new pharmacy and a new modern hospital under construction scheduled to be finished in 2014. There are 2 banks now. This is all thanks to Mireya Moscoso, Panama’s first female President who is native to Pedasi. She made it an objective during her term to improve the town in which she was born. There is a bust and plaque in the main town square in her honor.
Undoubtedly one of the main attractions to Pedasi is the endless number of deserted beaches that are surrounded by lush tropical landscapes intertwined with enchanting rolling hills. But do not be misled! There is so much more to see and do here, from world class fishing to surfing and snorkeling just to name a few.
And if you fancy a bit of a party than look no further with its numerous holidays for festivals and religious celebrations. Pedasi is the perfect place to let your hair down. The world famous Carnival is truly a “MUST SEE” event which takes place during the first week of March. Dance the day and night away while amazing displays of musicians and dancers parade the streets. Put on your most comfortable footwear and fiesta to the up tempo beats! With drink and food flowing continuously, it will be a week not to be forgotten…..so……
